Work experience
One of our Craft Artists works "hand-over-hand" with someone of work experienceWe have been offering work experience sessions to adults with profound learning disabilities since 2000. Each course usually lasts 6 months and involves one day per week in our workshop, using every hand and power tool hand-over-hand with one of our Craft Artists. Their care managers are often amazed with their ability to focus their attention and, with support, to grasp and use tools for long periods. They also acquire some skills in tool use, which is unexpected in people whose mental age is below eighteen months. At the end of the course they have made their own story-pack to keep. Comments from care managers have included: "It's something that Susan can actually do, she's really interested and there are no services available for her at the Day Centre" and "Tom loved it and we often use the story he made - when will he be coming back?"
